The Dorish Family's 1st Family Picture
Getting our family portrait taken as a kid was a traumatic experience for me, and I am sure for my brother as well.
My mom would force us to dress up in the scratchiest clothes ever made, stuff ourselves into the car and drive to the Olan Mills Portrait Studio across the bridge to get that special picture taken of our family. We always seemed to get there early, having to wait in the lobby , scratching away until the photographer was ready for us. We either got stuck with the ...
We know YOU aren't ready for this big change but more importantly, is your child? Each year, as parents get ready to send their little one off to kindergarten, they begin to wonder if their child is really ready to start school. For many parents, preparing their child for school is easier said than done because they aren't sure where to start.
Some interesting notations from a NY TIMES article about Kindergarten.
"Students who had learned much more in kindergarten were more likely to go to college than ...

The first thing you notice when walking through the door is all the color. Colorful chairs and colorful toys are scattered throughout the space. Activity carpets are everywhere, rockers are provided to read a book in, and a very popular bouncy ...

We're Late a Day--But It's Still Cute!
- Paper towel roll
- Brown paint
- Paint brushes
- Brown and green construction paper
- Pink paint
The first thing we did was cut the paper towel roll in half because we didn't want it so tall and then we can use the other half for another project. My daughter painted the paper towel roll with brown paint.
We traced my arm and hand (my daughter wanted to trace my arm and hand rather than me tracing hers). Then we cut it out and glued it to the paper ...
Whip of a batch of these easy, healthy red, white and blue muffins with the kids for Presidents Day- One day late ;)
Including whole wheat flour boosts the nutritional value and using frozen orange juice reduces the amount of refined sugar in the recipe. While making the muffins, you can share the story of George Washington chopping down the cherry tree as a young boy while you are adding the dried cherries.
1 1/2 cups unbleached all purpose flour
1 cup whole wheat flour
2/3 cup sugar ...
Milestone's That Matter
Last week, Marky was invited to a birthday party, for most parents with typical kids, this is not a big deal. For us, it is very exciting, it means that a child isn't affected by the fact that Marky may do things differently and can appreciate his charm and wit!
Well, this party brought us to another tremendous milestone, Marky went to the party, and we left! He stayed the 2 hours with his friends and he did fine! He followed guidelines, routines , sharing and even the opening of ...
TWO GREAT PGH SALES COMING!
Consigning Benefits Everybody
Now that the holidays are over, my house is busting at the seams. Literally. The Spring Consignment season can't come a minute too soon.
Consigning clothes, toys, decor, books, etc. benefits everybody involved. For sellers, it's a great way to get pass along your gently loved items. For buyers, you get perfectly good clothes or gear for a fraction of the retail cost.
When preparing to sell at a consignment sale, you really need to break the process down into steps. Otherwise, it ...
Tips for choosing a program!
My challenge for you in the new year is to invest some time and to do your homework in finding out about your options before you place your child on a waiting list for a potential school or daycare. Most schools offer an opportunity to visit classrooms, meet teachers, and to spend a bit of time in the space your child will call home for several hours or several days week. Preschool is not just preschool, school is not just school, and the programs offered are as varied as the ...

What do you think MK Robinson?
"Earn My Keep, the unique alternative allowance program featured in the book Earn It, Learn It, offers a way for parents and children to have fun learning about money, work, and the value of time well spent—by turning kids into “actual” professionals!
It's easy: parents and kids choose a task from one of 50 fun careers, complete it within a set amount of time, and earn while they learn.
The benefits of spending 15 minutes per week as a Toy Designer, Paleontologist, or Chef? Kids learn the difference ...
How can we learn from this?
There is no escaping the attention author Amy Chua has received about her book Battle Hymn of a Tiger Mother. I‘ve been captivated by the discussion, both as a Chinese American woman and a psychologist who works with families and children. . The intrigue is partly because of my clinical passions (parenting, culture and parent-child relationships) but mostly because her words struck a personal chord. I wasn’t brought up by a “tiger mother” but education was definitely a priority in my family. In fact, it wasn’t until I ...
Little Toader Macaroni Kid Discount!
Bedtime at our house is a ritual that always involves a book. Once the teeth are brushed, the face is washed and she’s out of those dirty play clothes, my daughter is climbing into her toddler bed with a book in hand. Sometimes it’s a chore, but above all, it’s a time to spend some one-on-one time with our special girl before she closes her eyes and drifts into dreamland.
StoryBook PJ’s make bedtime stories even more magical. It is a pajama and storybook package where ...
A Kid's Review!
The latest rendering of Shakespeare’s classic love story “Romeo and Juliet” comes to animated life on the silver screen with impish gnomes as the central characters. KIDS FIRST! film critic Ny’Asia Bell (8 years old) shares her review of the movie now playing in your local theaters. (See her video on YouTube.)

I Am Number Four
Author: Pittacus Lore (pseudonym for James Frey and Jobie Hughes)
I Am Number Four is a teen science fiction novel that will be the first of a series. It tells the story of John Smith (really), a 15-year-old who looks like he’s human, but is actually from the planet Lorien, which has been nearly destroyed by another alien race. Ten years ago, John and his guardian, Henri, escaped to Earth with eight other Lorien children and their protectors. They scattered throughout the world, knowing that ...
