Worried that your children will forget everything they learned over the course of the summer months? You may have more reason than you think to fear the summer brain drain according to a study by Duke University’s Dr. Harris Cooper, a leading expert on summer learning loss. He writes that long summer vacations “break the rhythm of instruction, lead to forgetting, and require a significant amount of review when students return to school in the fall.”
According to Cooper’s study, students’ overall achievement test scores drop by about ...

Consider it an investment.

This easy craft is fun for kids to do!
Cinco de Mayo is Spanish for the fifth of May and remembers the day in 1862 when Mexico's army had an unlikely victory over the French. Ironically, the holiday is not widely celebrated in Mexico...but we sure enjoy it here! This cookie is a tasty and easy way to celebrate. Olé.
What you need:
Refrigerated Sugar Cookie dough (we use the kind in a tube...but you could use your own dough and cut them into circles)
Bake cookies as directed ...
HAPPY CINCO DE MAYO
Empty toilet paper rolls
Black, silver, or gold paint (this will be the "metal" of your bracelet)
Paint brush or sponge
Dried beans in lots of colors (we bought the Bean Soup mix)
Take your toilet paper roll and cut it lengthwise. Then cut it in thirds. This will make three cuff bracelets.
Now you can paint the bracelet. You can make it silver, gold, or black. We did ours in black.
After the paint is dry, you are ready to glue on your "stones". We ...
We took some family time to go see the movie Hop. I asked my 9 year old to write a review.
I thought Hop was a great movie. It had some funny parts like when the Bunny pooped jelly beans. One thinkg I really liked about it was he was pretending to be a toy so he started clapping his hands and being stiff. Another thing is there was a chick named Carlos who wanted to be the Easter Bunny. I would reccommend this movie to children ages 2 and ...

Macaroni Kid, Ask Grandma!
Taking a a trip with he/she sounds like a great idea – unless it isn’t.I’m a believer in starting small with grand kids, just the way they start small and get bigger. For example: Have you spent a whole day with your grandchild? Has he done an overnight before? With you? If yes, how did it go? If no, that’s the first step before a trip.
Once you’ve decided to go for it, you might want to improve the likelihood of a successful excursion by ...
The Love and Logic Tool Kit
Being a parent of a 3 year old while a 1 year old hangs on my hip is the number one hardest test of self-control I have ever experienced - especially in public. Seriously, my patience has been pushed beyond the reasonable limits a human being should be expected to handle many times and I'm sure that most, if not all of you, can relate.
Just at the moment I want to throw a complete grown up temper tantrum along side my child, and start screaming and yelling inside the ...
2 Things You Can Make From Junk! By Brian Yanish
A few days ago a special package arrived at our doorstep. It was a cardboard mailer with stamped pictures of adorable creatures called ScrapKins and several recycling symbols. One of the symbols caught my eye. Above it, the words read “Eat more cereal.” By now I had realized that this was the review copy we requested of the new ScrapKins Build-It Book Vol. 1, 12 Things You Can Make From Junk! By Brian Yanish. But I was still confused about the cereal part.
I opened up the envelope and pulled ...
