My daughter's pre-school teacher is the creative genius behind this gardening activity for little ones.  My daughter has had so much fun at school watching her "caterpillar" get fuzzier by the day, that we had to create a couple of caterpillars for our garden at home as well.

Materials:

Soil

Grass Seed

Nylon stockings (knee highs or cut off at the knee)

Yarn

6-8 Pipe cleaners

Googly eyes

Directions:

Mix the grass seed and soil in a large bowl.

Have your children fill the stockings with the soil-mixture and tie off segments with yarn (create as many segments as you like). Be sure to tie off the open end of the stocking.

Insert pipe cleaners for legs and antennae, and attach googly eyes with adhesive.

Place the caterpillars where they will get plenty of sun and water, and watch them become fuzzy green creepy crawlies!
