Ringling Bros. and Barnum &Bailey® ALL NEW CIRCUS

Our Review!

I am a circus veteran… this is my second one I’ve attended so I thought I knew exactly what to expect…. I was WRONG!  Opening night of Ringling Bros. and Barnum &Bailey® ALL NEW CIRCUS at The Kovalchick Convention and Athletic Complex in Indiana was a unique experience I will not soon forget!  Both circuses I’ve seen were amazing productions with animals, acrobats and clowns but this circus had a completely different “feel” from the previous one I attended.  Both were fabulous and it made me really glad that I decided to go to this show even though it had only been a few months since we had seen another circus in Pittsburgh.

I was fortunate to have AWESOME seats… fifth row!!   I could actually smell the elephants when they came out.  This is not an exaggeration, I could really smell them!  For a five year old, this is exceptionally cool because, as she pointed out, she had never smelled an elephant before.

The pre-show is always a must attend event if you get the chance.  There is something spectacular about getting to walk where all of those performers are soon to tread that makes the kids (and adults) feel like they are really part of the show.  The kids were event invited to a limbo game lead by two beautiful ladies and a dance party lead by a hilarious clown!  This really set the tone for the evening and got the crowd pumped up.

The animals were the first up and my daughter literally jumped out of her seat when she saw the horses prance on stage!  All together in one ring were camels, large horses, ponies and even a miniature horse!  I could not believe how well trained these animals were and how well they worked together with animals of a different species!!  Later in the show they brought out several dogs that leapt through the air and landed on targets and even did serpentines through the other dog’s legs.  CRAZY good training and very entertaining for the kids.

Because we were so close to the stage and performers I got to see what felt like a behind the stage look.  When one act was waiting in the wings I saw a performer say  a prayer and lift his hands towards heaven before stepping on the floor.  Once I saw him flying through the air, I see why he felt the prayer was necessary!  The precision and technique necessary to perform some of the gymnastic moves while synchronized (and don’t forget smiling) the entire time, is nothing short of remarkable!

My favorite act had me literally gasping out loud! 3 men and 1 woman were running, jumping, skipping rope and standing on each other’s shoulders all while moving in some type of contraption that was continuously circling and had 2 round metal cages on either end.  (Seriously, who thinks up this stuff!!)  No safety harnesses and flying high above a cement floor, they smiled, ran and jumped with precision and ease as if this was in some way natural for them. I often trip over my own two feet so to imagine doing this made my heart skip a beat!  I have determined after tonight that if my son or daughter decides to run away with the circus, I may never sleep again because this is dangerous stuff!

One of my nephew’s favorite acts was the strong man.  He juggled 70 pound weight above him like they were feathers and lifted half the cast of circus people all at one time like they were newborns. At first I thought he must be using “trick” weights but when they offered to give an audience member $1,000 if they could lift one of the heaviest weights over his head with one hand, not even money could make him that strong!!    I don’t want to give away the finale but I will say it has to do with him, a full-size car and even more circus people.    This man was mind-blowing!

If you’ve already been to the circus this year, you MUST go again and if you haven’t been yet, don’t let this show pass you by! There were too many amazing acts to mention and I haven't even scratched the surface of the talent of each of the performers and stage hands that make this show The Greatest Show on Earth!  (You knew I had to say it sooner or later!)

The Kovalchick Convention and Athletic Complex in Indiana is just a short trip from Pittsburgh and it is worth the trip!  The intimate setting and cheaper rates have me singing the praises of this facility!
