Make Your Own Bento Lunch Box

As seen on KDKA's Pittsburgh Today Live

Bento boxes are all the rage.  And why wouldn't they be?  They are super cute and hold small portions of food separately to make it seem very inviting and manageable.  Why is it that you can take something completely healthy and unappealing, put it in an attractive box and it immeditately draws you to it.  Calling your name... like the last cookie sitting in your cabinet when you are working at your computer at midnight writing an article for a lunch box series....

One moment please while I ...uh...take a little break to uh...stretch my legs.  YES!  To stretch my legs!

*munch munch munch*

And I'm back!  Much better!

And the possibilities are endless as to the cute configurations you can come up with.

To get ready for back to school we have focused on some lunch box options for you.

We used products from our favorite place OXO.  A large sandwich container then some smaller ones fit inside perfectly!

Now what to put in this?

We have some ideas!

How about some kabobs?  BUT with a twist!  A pretzel twist that is!

All you need is some lunch meat and cheese cubes.  You can even cut up string cheese.

Pop them onto the pretzel rods and you have got yourself a cute kabob for the kiddos!

Now onto some pinwheels!  You thought they were just for appetizers but no way baby!  Kids love 'em.  I use different colored tortillas that are whole grain, add cream cheese or hummus (if you don't tell them what hummus is and call it snail poo they will eat it...I swear!), some meat and you are good to go.  Wrap them tightly and then slice. D.O.N.E.

Cheese is a great snack to send in but is a little bit boring.  Unless you cut it!

Bwahahahaha!  GET IT?  Cut the cheese!  I have the sense of humor of my 6 year old and am hopped up on the last cookie....I mean carrots and hummus I just ate.  Forgive me!

Just take cookie cutters and you can make anything you want.  We used small fondant cutters we found at a craft store for a few dollars because we like having them smaller for our boxes.

Then you put it all together, add in some dried fruit and you are good to go.  Pop on that stay fresh, no spill lid and you are guaranteed to not get traded out for the cool lunch today!  You WILL BE the cool lunch!

And that is how you do a Bento Box Baby!
