Make Your Own...

As the summer draws to a close, your family might be running out of fun activities to do.  You went to the fair...  you went to the pool... you went to the park.  What should you do today?

Maybe you can try something new, like make your own fun.  Make something together that will keep your kids busy and interested.  Here are some easy recipes for an afternoon full of fun.

Bubbles

Instead of cracking open that gallon size bottle of bubbles, make your own.  You can use all you favorite bubble wands, or you can make your own out of string or hangers.  Use this formula for perfect bubbles:

  • 1 part dish soap
  • 8 parts water
  • 1/4 part or less of corn syrup or glycerin

Play-Doh

If you make your own play-doh, your kids can make it any color they want to.  Also, if they mix all the different colors of play-doh together, you can just make a new batch.  No harm done!

  • 1 cup flour
  • 1 cup boiling water
  • 2 tablespoons cream of tartar
  • 1/2 cup salt
  • 1 tablespoon oil
  • Food coloring

Mix and knead all ingredients together.  This play-doh is not sticky and does not dry out.

Soap Crayons

These are great to make if you have a kiddo who hates to take a bath.  They can help you make these crayons, and use them to decorate the bath tub.  Since they are made of soap, they will wash right off.  Of course, your child will want to draw more pictures as soon as the old ones are scrubbed.

  • 1 3/4 cup Ivory Snow powder
  • 1/2 cup water
  • Food coloring

Mix water and soap flakes together.  Add Food coloring and put mixture into an ice cube tray.  Allow hardening.  Break or cut into pieces.
