Greer Lankton Events Expand + Teen Art Open Call

It's All About Greer Lankton event series spots are filling up!

March 16, 2022
Join us this March and April for It's All About Greer Lankton, a FREE event series leading up to the launch of an online finding aid to celebrate the famed artist Greer Lankton. Over 15,000 materials, the archive offers an unfiltered view into Lankton’s life, eloquently exploring and questioning the norms of gender and sexuality, iconography, popular culture, consumerism and socially-engaged art.

Beginning on March 18 - Celebrate Greer Lankton and Queer Youth, a night for teens, by teens. The Mattress Factory Teen Art Coorperative are taking over to introduce you to the work of Greer Lankton, help celebrate the Greer Digital Collection Finding Aid launch, and to celebrate the Queer youth of Pittsburgh. A night of art, fun, photobooths, Teen-led tours of Greer Lankton’s installation, music and (of course) free food!

Core to the events will be an online symposium on April 15, Queer Afterlives in Artist Archives, a collaboration with the Department of History of Art and Architecture at the University of Pittsburgh. This symposium will bring together archivists and scholars with artists whose work engages with archives, the histories of Queer art and the identity it can reveal.

The series will culminate in Greer’s Birthday Bash on April 21 - what would have been Greer's 64th birthday. This free community day will mark the official launch of the Greer Lankton Collection Finding Aid. Admission to the Museum is free all day, with events and programming taking place from 3-7 PM.

Pre-registration is required for all events, and spots are filling up quickly, so register ASAP to get the time-slot that works best for you!

TEENS: Submit your art for the Mirrors of the Mind show!
Calling all teens! The Mattress Factory Teen Art Cooperative is hosting an art show, and we want you to be a part of it! The theme of the show is introspection and self-reflection. We are looking for artists in grades 8-12 living in the Pittsburgh area to be a part of this show.

We are accepting all kinds of artwork! Sculptural, two-dimensional, digital (if we have a way to display it), textile-based - we want it all! Works should be 'ready to hang' (i.e. if you are submitting a two-dimensional piece, you must include a hanging method). See here for more info on acceptable artworks and so on.

Submissions deadline is April 13, and you must have a way to transport your work(s) to and from the Museum!

Breaking down the barriers between Art & Sports
The Mattress Factory and the Pittsburgh Penguins have partnered up for the Pens4Purpose community ticket program! Through this program, you can score tickets to the April 21 home game against the Bruins and a FREE 1 Year Membership to the Mattress Factory. We hope this partnership helps you enjoy both Sports AND Art in the coming year!

So why put an artist on a hockey card? One of the Mattress Factory's closest collaborators and friends, Greer Lankton, was the perfect choice to spotlight in our throwback "Hockey Card" design. Originally from Flint, MI, hockey was absolutely a part of Greer's cultural perspective, and the campy design and high contrast of trading cards are often also seen in her work.

[As an added bonus for Penguins fans, if you know what year Nick Harbaruk retired, that’s the same year the Museum was founded!]

When you visit using your new free 1 Year Membership to the Mattress Factory after buying your Pens tickets for April 21, make sure to examine Greer’s installation It's All About ME, not you.
