When we began Emma in Tang Soo Do Imperial Dragon Karate School over a year and a half ago we never thought we'd be so dedicated to the sport as a family. Our pride for our daughter's building skill level and confidence resemble that of a blow-fish! We're THAT proud. The proud that you feel.. when you're trying to hold it in so as to remain somewhat of a " non embarrassment" to your newly " always embarrassed by you" 7 year old but little by little it just keeps swelling!
We're BLOW-FISH'in it all around our house.
We're pretty much to the point of having Emma tell us " enough already" and with that.. she pops our little blow-fish time.
Little does she know that we blow-fish again when we talk to each other as parents when she's not looking--- about how far she's come, the changes in her disposition when she talks about her "form" and the new kicks she's learning. Her seriousness when she speaks of finally learning to use the staffs and her overall general attitude toward the sport.
She respects this sport.
We are simply amazed and genuinely grateful to our friends for encouraging us to let her give it a shot. It was free for a month, her uniform was included in the cost, the chance at fitness each week was priceless and perhaps she'd learn something? That was our hope.
Our daughter, as I blowfished several times before in this publication-- has become so much more because of this sport. She recognizes "effort" and "achievement" and in a time when all too often prizes and titles are awarded to those for just participating.. this sport remains true.
Emma "gets" it.
She gets that "to earn" you must first " learn."
She gets that her dedication to the sport, her practice and serious disposition-- honor her instructor and all the effort Master Harvey puts forth.
That is called, R-E-S-P-E-C-T my friends.
While we're still working on this word at home---- towards those blowfish, oh so embarassing parents.
My daughter has it downpat out in the world. I have Tang Soo Do Imperial Dragon Karate School to thank. Master Harvey has helped to craft my daugther into this amazing little martial artist-- who understands far beyond the martial arts teachings. She's also given us as parents the chance to "high five" each other-- as if we had anything to do with it besides signing her up. But boy--- does it feel good to feel like you've done something "right" as a parent. Those days that tell you otherwise-- are long and hard.
Tang Soo Do is to better oneself.
She gets that.
*While we sit blow-fishing it on the sidelines!* "Shhhh," don't tell her!
