Keys To Happiness-Last Minute Mother's Day Gift

As Seen On KDKA

May 8, 2012
Everyone knows that the KEY to Mom's heart this mother's day is ORGANIZATION!  We modified this idea we found on familyfun.go.com and tried it ourselves for you!  It turned out to be totally gift worthy and certainly something the entire family can participate in.  After all, isn't that truly what mother's day is about.  Showering mom with tacky-licious gifts that little fingers toiled over?

We KNOW mom will appreciate this Keys To Happiness key rack because she won't have to search endlessly for her car keys!  They'll be hanging with love right where they should be.

Materials:

1 piece of pine wood
choose any shape you'd like  ( pine is very soft and the hooks will easily go into it)

2 or more cup hooks
We used 1 1/4 " and they seemed to be JUST big enough to hold some heavy duty keys while not drilling through the back of the wood piece.

Paint stirrer sticks
( these are free at local big box store paint sections)  to represent each loved family member - don't forget Fido or Fluffy

Acrylic Paint, paint brushes, markers, crayons, hot glue and yarn
These items will help to decorate and color your creation as well as your faux family members.

HOW TO

Select your wood base.
Paint it the color of choice.

Place and size your stirrer sticks.  I used another stir stick to draw a line.  This told me where to stop on each faux person but allowed me to size them appropriately.

Using a small saw gently saw off the unusable portion.  Be careful, these sticks splinter easily.  We also lightly sanded the edges.

Get out the markers and crayons and have the kids decorate.  Each one of these was done by my children ages 5 and 8.

We added the hair last using a hot glue gun.

Hot glue your faux family to the front, top or side.  Whatever floats your boat.
Last, screw in and place your cup hooks.

You also might need a picture hanging piece as well in order to hang it to the wall.

Isn't it cute?

Last, write something clever or family oriented on your "canvas."
