What should I eat before working out and after?

By Leigh Lukasiak December 1, 2010

Mandy Evans Asked:

What to eat before working out and after. I eat breakfast with the kiddos in the morning, feel the need to have some protein before hitting the gym and then am starving when I get home! I feel like I am eating 3 times more than I should!

Great Question!!!  This is one of the key factors to a successful fitness program.  First of all, breakfast is one of the most important meals of the day.  After starving your body through the nite, your body needs fuel for the day so go ahead and eat a healthy breakfast.  Now the nuts of bolts of pre and post workout nutrition.  Pre workout carbs are more important.  Carbs are going to allow the body to have energy to push you through your entire workout.  Post workout, after breaking down muscle, the body needs protein to help build the muscle back up. A great pre workout snack is a luna bar or granola bar, post workout nutrition should be a protein shake.   Consuming a protein shake within 45 minutes of a workout promotes optimal nutrient utilization.
