Shrek The Musical- PMT Editor Review

By Crissy Cicchino, Macaroni Kid of Pittsburgh LLC February 11, 2014
Yes. I realized that Shrek the Musical was a Pittsburgh Musical Theater production and that PMT has consistently captivated me. But… Shrek? Live and in a musical form? How could justice be given to the hit DreamWorks film that it is based on?

I decided that I should bring the toughest, most painfully honest critics that I know, my three oldest children. Granted, they were not yet born when the film was released back in 2001 and didn’t catch Shrek Fever until Shrek the Third came out in 2007. They then devoured the prior films and by the release of Shrek Forever After in 2010, cinched their title of “Shrek Connoisseurs”.

Directed by Colleen Petrucci, this production of Shrek is another hit for PMT.  Billy Mason is perfect in the ever-lovable role of Shrek as he sets out to save the beautiful princess Fiona for the eccentric Lord Farquaad. If you are not familiar with the character of Lord Farquaad, he is quite short in stature. Tim Hartman, the actor who plays him, is not! He performed while standing on his knees and kept the audience laughing with his physical comedy. He even danced that way!

The three toughest critics I know gave the show three ogre thumbs up.

For my boys, David Toole couldn’t have done a better job portraying Donkey. He was every bit as hilarious and endearing as I remember Donkey being. I thought Emily Lynne Miller, who played Princess Fiona shined in her part in the number, “Who I’d Be”.

My daughter was delighted when Shrek and Donkey came down the aisle. There were Pittsburgh references and a certain duck even made an appearance.  Add in that the actors make themselves available after the show and you have a fun family- friendly experience that you will not want to miss.

Hurry!  Our favorite Ogre goes back to his swamp after the February 16th showing. Tickets start at just $12.25. For information on ticket sales, please visit HERE.
