Three Rivers Rowing Association offers year-round junior rowing programs. There is no doubt that summer is a special season for rowing in Pittsburgh – it is an excellent time to discover a new sport! A one-week trial allows participants to get on the water and experience the best the sport of rowing has to offer. Rowing is a great way to get in shape, learn teamwork skills, and develop athletic abilities. Rowing is non-contact, and develops great amounts of coordination. This is a complete workout both physically and mentally.
Camps are open to male and female individuals currently in or about to enter 4th-12th grades. The camps will be divided by age group: 4th-7th grade and 8th-12th grade.
Summer Learn to Row Camps (8th-12th graders):
The Summer Learn to Row Camps are for participants who want to learn how to row. Emphasis is on technique refinement, exercise, and the joy of summer rowing. The first day or two will be spent learning on the ergometers (rowing machines) and in the rowing tanks to teach beginner members the terminology, water safety, equipment, and rowing technique. After successful completion of the introduction, the camp will practice together and compete in a scrimmage/race on the water.
Summer Introduction to Rowing Camps (4th-7th graders):
The Summer Intro to Rowing Camps are for participants who want to learn more about the ever growing sport of rowing. Emphasis is on fun and exercise. Participants will be introduced to the sport of rowing through various activities during the week. Activities will take place inside and outside. After learning about the proper technique and safety, participants will be encouraged to try rowing on the water in sculling shells and enjoy a great active atmosphere with great coaches.
About the sport
Rowing is both a full-body and full-life sport. Because the sport is non-contact, athletes can participate from the earliest of ages all the way into their 80s! Participation in rowing offers many benefits, as it requires supreme coordination and teamwork. Athletes are in the same boat with their teammates and must work together to make the boat move (it’s pretty hard to get 8 people to do the exact same thing at the exact same time!). At the earliest levels of rowing, the focus is on learning basic fundamentals and learning how to operate in a team-centric atmosphere. As athletes develop, they are pushed to their own individual potential. Through high school athletes begin to become very competitive, and compete at the regional and national level. No one can achieve individual success without the success of the whole team. Teamwork and selflessness are key factors to becoming the best rower you can be!
About Three Rivers Junior Rowing
Three Rivers Junior Rowing has been very successful in developing athletes over the years. We consistently compete at the USRowing Youth National Championships, and also graduate athletes that go on to earn scholarships at some of the best rowing universities in the country. In the past three years we have qualified numerous boats to compete at the National Championship – and earning two silver medals in the process. In the last three years we have also sent athletes to Syracuse, Northeastern, Ohio State, Louisville, Michigan, and Wisconsin (among others) to pursue rowing at the collegiate level. The reason we are able to develop athletes to the highest level of the sport is our focus on the team success as a result of individual progress. We require each athlete to give their best effort on a daily basis in order to achieve their highest level of individual potential. When each member of the team is focused on being his or her best, the team can be at its best.
