It’s the slide that has nothing to do with the playground: The dreaded “summer slide.” The term refers to the potential for our kids to lose knowledge they gained in the classroom by resting their school-year learning muscles during the break. But what if we told you research shows combatting this learning loss was as easy as reading five books over the summer – and there’s a turnkey program to help them do it?

Enter Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh’s annual Summer Reading Program. This year’s program, dubbed READ-A-PALOOZA BOOK BOWL 2024, is sparking some friendly competition around the City where readers can become champions by taking part in a summer of literary fun, now through August 11 – where the only rule is to enjoy every word!
Team spirit is the name of the game this summer, so read on to find out how you can get the entire family involved and score some prizes along the way.
Here’s what you need to know
- Join a Team: You can register with your neighborhood CLP location in-person or online using Beanstack. Each of the 20 teams will compete to read and log the most books, with the winners announced at the end of the summer.
- Attend an Opening Ceremony: Kick off the competition by attending a celebration at your nearest CLP location and help light the “torch” to officially start the literary games.
- Grab a Free Tote Bag: When selecting your books for the summer, stop by the library to pick up a READ-A-PALOOZA BOOK BOWL tote bag to carry your reads in style (while supplies last).
- Let the Games Begin: Read and log your books before August 11 to be automatically entered in your team’s monthly prize drawing. Prizes include Visa gift cards, as well as tickets to Pittsburgh Pirate games!
- Go for the Gold: Read five books to be a Reading Challenge Champion and you will be automatically entered to win a grand prize basket, which will be drawn at the end of the summer.
- Play the Bingo Challenge: Add to the fun for a chance to win more prizes. Ask about it at your neighborhood CLP location.
