Description
Now going into its Twentieth Harvest Season, the Farmers' Market at St James Church of the Divine Redeemer Parish supports an eight month weekly local farmers and early merchants market. The market is open every Saturday from the first Saturday in April (except Holy Saturday, closed) to the last Saturday before Thanksgiving. The market is always open from 9 am until 1 pm regardless of weather conditions.
For safety reasons, the public is asked to stay out of the market area during the farmer and merchant setup time that runs from 8 am until 9 am. The market area is secured at the periphery by orange cones and two barriers that restrict traffic from the market.
Because of the enormous success of the market from Sewickley and neighboring communities (peak season 1,300 customers/4 hr market) and the many functions at the Church, parking spaces have become a premium over the years. Beginning this year, the parish parking lot will be divided in half to help facilitate the functions of both entities.
When entering the parish driveway off of Walnut, a 'Church Parking Only' sign with an arrow will point to the right side; opposite this sign will be another tosaying, 'Market Parking Only' with an arrow pointing to the left side. In addition, the Church has made available another of its parking lot at the corner of Walnut & Fredrick St on the same block and only a short stroll from the market place. Signs can be seen designating this extra parking.(A general rule of thumb, when driving to the market from 9 until 11, try to park at the Walnut & Frederick Lot first to assure space.)
Adjacent to the market is the Old St Joseph's Convent located on Broad Street. From May through October the lawn will have 12 Cape Cod chairs for families and friends to rest and socialize. Many find it a nice casual time to feast on some of the foods from the market for breakfast and lunch.
Members of this market have a great sense of hospitality, friendship and a willingness to help their customers with handling their produce to their cars: dozens of corn, pumpkins, and big purchases should have assistance from them and the market director, just ask for help.
We all love our pets, but customers at the market have asked that this not be permissible for many obvious reasons, think about the reasons and they'll come to you!
Weekly seasonal photos will be posted on this site to facilitate timely farmers and merchants produce availability and diversity of product. This will keep you in the 'know' and help you buy the freshest available produce weekly.
